Why I Hate Stretching: Explore my journey and discover my top 5 practical tips for incorporating stretching.

I am 49 years old and have been an avid runner for most of my life. From a young age, I discovered that running was my sanctuary — a place where I could be myself and find solace no matter the situation. Lifting weights became an important part of my routine as I aged to help improve bone density and support my physical and mental well-being. “Lifting weights “can play a significant role in promoting bone health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures” (MyOpenWorkouts, 2024). Yet, despite my dedication to fitness, there is one aspect I have never been able to commit to: Stretching.

The Reluctance to Stretch

Stretching has always been the one thing I know I should do, but just can’t bring myself to commit to. Whether before a run to warm up or after a lifting session, stretching feels like a chore I’d rather skip. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t prefer jumping straight into their favourite activity?

After a CrossFit session, the class gathers to cool down and stretch. I instead “rush” off thinking I don’t have a spare 5 minutes to stretch (the reality is I probably do). It is after these sessions that I suffer, and I know that if I had taken the time to stretch, I would be suffering a lot less. I know this because I have tried it a few times.

The Consequences of Neglect

Over the years, my lack of stretching has caught up with me. I often find myself stiff and sore, with a level of flexibility that is, quite frankly, appalling. It’s no secret that stretching can alleviate many physical ailments, yet I continue to avoid it. It’s like knowing the answer to a problem, but stubbornly refusing to write it down.

The Irony of Knowing the Solution

The irony is not lost on me. I am fully aware that stretching is the solution to many of my physical issues. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Regular stretching can help improve flexibility, and, consequently, range of motion in your joints. Better flexibility may improve your performance in physical activities and decrease your risk of injuries by helping your joints move through their full range of motion and enabling your muscles to work most effectively” (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

The Shared Struggle

Interestingly, I am not alone in this struggle. Many fitness enthusiasts I have talked to share the same issue with stretching. It’s a common gripe among those who prefer more dynamic forms of exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic (2024), “Although many adults recognize the benefits of stretching, regular practice remains low.

The Psychology Behind Avoiding Stretching

Studies suggests that people often avoid stretching, despite knowing its benefits, due to its perception as less engaging and rewarding compared to other forms of exercise. Individuals are typically more motivated to engage in activities that provide immediate gratification and enjoyment. Stretching, which often lacks instant rewards, can feel like an additional, less necessary component of a packed exercise routine.

Seeking Solutions

Given the widespread reluctance to stretch, it’s clear that many of us are looking for effective ways to incorporate it into our routines. Here are some tips that might help.

My Top 5 Tips For Incorporating Stretching into Your Routine

  1. Start Small: Begin with short, manageable sessions. Even 5 minutes of stretching can make a difference

  2. Incorporate It Into Your Routine: Try to stretch at the end of your workout when your muscles are warm. If you can commit an hour to working out, surely you can spare 5 minutes to cool down and stretch.

  3. Set Realistic Goals: Aim to stretch a couple of times a week to start with, and gradually increase the frequency as it becomes a habit.

  4. Use Technology: There are numerous apps designed to remind you to stretch and guide you through routines. These can provide structure, motivation, and even a sense of accomplishment.

  5. Remember the Benefits: Regular stretching can improve flexibility, reduce pain, and lower the risk of injury, enhancing your overall fitness and quality of life.

We all know stretching has its benefits, but how often do we actually do it? Take a moment to share your thoughts and insights on stretching in your fitness routine. Your responses will help shed light on common challenges and motivations among fitness enthusiasts.
